The Fulbright Memorial Fund (FMF)
Teacher Program is sponsored by the Government of Japan in order to promote
understanding between the United States and Japan. It is administered
by the Japan-United States Educational Commission (JUSEC) in Tokyo.
The Institute of International Education (IIE) assists JUSEC by coordinating
publicity, recruitment, and preliminary applicant screening in the United
States. Since its initiation in 1997, the FMF Teacher Program has
sent 1,700 educators to Japan.
The FMF Teacher Program is a valuable
opportunity for cultural exchange and professional development. During
the three-week, fully funded study program, American educators are exposed
to the Japanese culture and education system as they meet with Japanese
government officials and educators. Participants visit urban schools,
museums, and historic landmarks while in Tokyo. Then, in small prefecture
groups, the participants spend ten days visiting a particular city outside
of Tokyo. While in their respective cities, participants visit local
schools and teachers' colleges where they interact with Japanese teachers,
students, parents, and administrators. Participants also experience
traditional Japanese life during a homestay with a host family and a trip
to a traditional Japanese inn.
